(ROCKFORD, IL) — Crews are cleaning up wreckage caused by tornadoes that left a trail of destruction in parts of Northern Illinois. Tornadoes destroyed homes and businesses in several communities including Fairdale, Rochelle, Ashton and the Rockford area. Firefighters were forced to pull people trapped inside collapsed buildings. Governor Rauner even activated the State Incident Response Center so personnel and equipment could be quickly deployed if local emergency responders needed help. A state emergency management spokesperson says one person was killed when a tornado hit Fairdale in DeKalb County. At least seven others there were taken to the hospital. At least 14-people are safe after being trapped inside a restaurant located in a Northern Illinois town ravaged by tornadoes. Authorities say the people were rescued yesterday from inside the Grubsteakers restaurant in Rochelle. It has not been confirmed if there were any injuries. The restaurant itself was destroyed. Crews will still out late last night searching the rubble of homes and businesses destroyed by the storms.
