(Granite City, IL) — There will be counseling and job training available for the more than two-thousand steel workers being laid off from U.S. Steel’s Granite City plant next month. City and Madison County officials say the state is working with local agencies to form a rapid response team to help the soon-to-be displaced workers with help with unemployment compensation, finding health insurance and job retraining. U.S. Steel says falling crude oil prices and cheaper imported steel forced them to close the rolled steel mill for an undetermined amount of time.
