(MT. VERNON) — The Mt Vernon City Council held a meeting Monday night. On the agenda, the first reading of an Ordinance Amending Section 11.17 on raffles and poker runs. The city law matches state law, and says any organization of five years or more has to have a gambling license. The amount for a license is 20 dollars and has to be renewed every year. Also discussed at the meeting, Mayor Mary Jane Chesley addressed the crowd saying she was notified last Friday that the Illinois Attorney General’s office wanted her office’s computer. Chesley says she is complying with any order coming from the Attorney General’s office over their investigation on the suspected Open Meetings Act violation. Also, it was announced that the closure for 42nd Street in Mt Vernon was set for May 1. The road is suspected to be initially closed to one lane, but eventually will be close entirely due to construction. Finally, the city council confirmed the bid to Central State Fireworks for the Freedom Fireworks show for Independence Day. The bid was for $20,000. Central State has been the fireworks provider for the last 4 shows in Mt Vernon, and also offered to provide more shells for the same price as the other bidder.
