Illinois Lawmaker Calls On President To Save Steel Industry

(Granite City, IL) — An Illinois lawmaker is calling on the White House to stop the closing of a U.S. Steel plant in Granite City. State Senator Bill Haine recently filed legislation in Springfield that’s requesting President Obama and Congress to take a close look at the country’s tariff policy on steel goods. Tariffs are the taxes that are paid on imports and exports. Haine believes that placing higher tariffs on foreign steel, which would give American steel companies a leg up on their foreign counterparts.
