Energy Police Apprehend Armed Felon

(ENERGY, IL) — An Energy police officer apprehended an armed felon Sunday afternoon. Energy Police Chief Shawn Ladd says around 4:25 p.m., an Energy officer went to help Herrin Police regarding a call about a man, identified as 42-year-old Anton Burton of Chicago, having a gun at Huck’s located at 520 South Park Ave. in Herrin. When the Energy officer arrived, he learned that Burton had left the area on foot. The officer saw Burton a short time later near the intersection of South Park and Lyerla streets. When the officer saw that Burton was armed with a pistol, and made contact with him, Burton fled. He led police on a short foot chase, but it ended when the officer deployed a taser, which stopped Burton. Burton was disarmed by the Energy officer and Herrin Police arrived to assist. Police noticed the serial numbers had been filed off of the .38 revolver that was found. Burton also had a small amount of suspected cocaine on him as well. Police learned that Burton had an extensive criminal history with numerous felony convictions. He was taken to the Williamson County Jail on charges of unlawful use of a weapon by a felon, obstructing a peace officer, defacing identification marks on a firearm, violation of FOID, possession of a controlled substance and disorderly conduct.
