Lawmaker Wants To Restore Legislative Scholarships

(Springfield, IL) — One state lawmaker wants to revive the legislative scholarship program that was abandoned nearly three years ago amid reports that the money was handed out to those with political connections. Democrat Thaddeus Jones of Calumet City has introduced a bill to restore and even enlarge the program that allows lawmakers to award scholarships to state schools to residents of their districts. Jones’ bill would allow each lawmaker to award four one-year scholarships and two four-year scholarships each year. The estimated pricetag of the bill is about 13-million-dollars a year.
