Bill Would Double Earned Income Tax Credit

(Springfield, IL) — Democrats in the Illinois House and Senate want to double a tax-break for low-income families so that more children can be lifted out of poverty. In calling for an increase in the earned income tax credit, the lawmakers cite a report by advocacy group Voices for Illinois Children that says about 21-percent of Illinois children live in households below the poverty line. The bill would increase the tax credit from ten-percent to 20-percent over five years, but it faces an uncertain future given the state’s tenuous finances.
