The Mt Vernon City Council held its meeting on Monday containing the decision on the proposal to sell the water and sewer lines to the company, Illinois American Water. The meeting was conducted in front of a crowd of concerned citizens from the city and surrounding villages asking for the decision to be delayed. Both sides of the proposal were accounted for with representatives of nearby areas giving their opinion and their experience with IAW, and members of the CCJC and others were asking for the decision to be delayed or put to be public vote. The Council tabled the decision without any indication of when it will be addressed again. In compliance with the Open Meetings Act, the council will have to put the decision on the agenda 48 hours in advance and must decide on the proposal in an open meeting and not in an executive session. The council also agreed on a workshop to help inform the public on Monday March, 9. This workshop will be strictly for addressing the public, and not the decision on the proposal.
