Durbin, Kirk Say Sugar Supports Sour Candy Industry

(Washington, DC) — Illinois Senators Mark Kirk and Dick Durbin are trying to help candy makers in the state by calling for an end to federal subsidies for sugar beet producers. Kirk, Durbin and fifteen of their colleagues say price supports for beets drive up the cost of sugar for candy makers and that, they say, has driven much of the candy business overseas. A statement from Kirk called the subsidy a “three-hundred-million-dollar bailout,” but lawmakers from beet-producing states have been successful in prior years in keeping the price supports in place.
