CARBONDALE, Ill. (AP) — Acclaimed poet Nikki Giovanni is scheduled to speak at Southern Illinois University for Black History Month. The Southern Illinoisan reports that Giovanni will give a presentation called “Human by the Grace of God: A View of Diversity” on Feb. 19 in the school’s Shryock Auditorium. Giovanni is the winner of the Langston Hughes Medal and NAACP Image awards. She has written dozens of books and volumes of poetry. Derrick Williams is coordinator of SIU’s Black Resource Center. He says Giovanni is fitting “given her long list of activist work, poetry and work as an academic.”
