Rauner Slams Unions In State Of The State Speech

(Springfield, IL) — Governor Rauner had labor unions, both public and private, in the crosshairs Wednesday in his first State of the State address to the General Assembly. He blamed public worker unions for higher property taxes and the state’s pension mess and called for limits to their negotiation powers and a ban on political contributions by public sector unions. As for private sector unions, Rauner said local voters should decide if union wages should have to be paid and whether workers in local companies have to join unions. In anticipation of his remarks, many lawmakers wore yellow buttons to the House chamber with the slogan, “I support unions.”
