(Rockford, IL) — A troubled youth home is shutting down after an investigation revealed some the youth were being assaulted and turning to lives of prostitution. The Rock River Academy, in Rockford, housed female wards of the state, but they’re voluntarily terminating their contract with DCFS. The move comes after a “Chicago Tribune” investigation showed the girls were being physically and sexually abused. Many of them were running away and being pimped out. State officials said they were appalled by the revelations and stopped sending kids to Rock River back in December. Now, Rock River officials say they don’t have enough non-state wards to sustain them. They also say it’s unfortunate that the negative coverage has overshadowed the success they’ve had in improving people’s lives.
