(BENTON, IL) — Residents and small businesses in Benton who participate in the city’s Municipal Electric Aggregation initiative will be getting a letter from their power supplier in the near future saying that Homefield Energy of Collinsville will supply power though June. According to a press release, Homefield had the low bid of 4.494 cents per kilowatt hour to win the contract for electricity. First Energy Solutions will continue serving the city through March. Higher electricity prices caused by heavier demand for electricity last fall caused the city to delay seeking bids for a contract to succeed the current one. Mayor Gary Kraft said at Monday night’s city council meeting that residents will still be able to opt out of the change at no charge. Kraft said the price of electricity will include electricity, transmission and related charges and will remain fixed throughout the term of the contract. Ameren will continue to be responsible for delivery of electricity to Benton customers and will continue to include the supply cost in the monthly electric bill.
