(Jackson County, IL) — Jackson County is being called the poorest in the state. According to the news website, 247 WallSt.com, the poverty rate there tops 30-percent and the unemployment rate is sitting right around eight-percent. And, people who are working aren’t bringing in much money. The average salary in Jackson County was 33-thousand-480-dollars a year between 2009 and 2013. That’s more than 23-thousand-dollars below the state average. County leaders say the survey doesn’t paint an appropriate picture of what’s really happening in Jackson County, partly because SIU students were included in determining per capital income level.
