School Funding Rewrite Back Again

(Springfield, IL) — Illinois State Senator Andy Manar is bringing back his plan to rewrite the school funding formula with changes he says will improve its chances of passage. Manar’s plan would still redirect more state money to poorer districts at the expense of wealthier ones, but he’s adding a provision to factor in the cost of living in those wealthy districts. The change means the wealthier districts would lose less state money than under his earlier plan, which passed the Illinois Senate, but stalled in the House. The formula hasn’t been changed since 1997.
