New General Assembly Takes Oath, Chooses Leaders

(Springfield, IL) — In two separate ceremonies Wednesday in Springfield, members of the Illinois House and Senate have been sworn in for their new terms. Then, members of each body voted to retain the same leaders as in the previous General Assembly, meaning Michael Madigan remains Speaker of the House, a post he’s held with just one two-year break since 1983. John Cullerton was elected as Senate President, while Christine Radogno was chosen as Senate Republican leader and Jim Durkin as House Republican leader. Democrats continue to hold veto-proof majorities in both houses.
