EAST CARONDELET, Ill. (AP) — Two men escaped injury when their aircraft made a forced landing in a muddy farm field near the southern Illinois community of East Carondelet. St. Clair County Sheriff’s Lt. Scott Weymouth says flight instructor Benjamin Lefton and student, 67-year-old Richard Rush, both of St. Louis took off Tuesday from Missouri’s Creve Coeur Airport in a single-engine Cessna. They were returning to the airport when the plane experienced engine trouble. The 70-year-old Lefton said he and Rush chose not to try reaching St. Louis Downtown Airport, less than 10 miles from where they eventually landed, because they feared the plane might catch fire. Lefton said the powerless glide, which lasted two minutes, took the plane over the Mississippi River before it made a rough landing in the field southeast of St. Louis.
