Gov.-elect Rauner names key advisers, cabinet directors

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) — Gov.-elect Bruce Rauner has named a Democrat, campaign workers and former employees of an Indiana governor to his inner-circle and cabinet posts. The Republican — who will be inaugurated Monday — announced the appointments late Saturday. Rauner named former Sen. James Meeks of Chicago as chairman of the State Board of Education. The Democrat was an education advocate in the Senate. Randy Blankenhorn will be secretary of Transportation — an agency with hiring troubles. Blankenhorn worked for the department before taking over a Chicago planning agency. Tim Nuding will be Rauner’s budget director. He is chief of staff to Illinois Senate Republican Leader Christine Radogno. Key campaign staff members will have prominent posts, and three former aides to former Indiana Gov. Mitch Daniels are on the team as well.
