(CARLYLE, IL) — An 18-year-old man and an unnamed juvenile male have been arrested in connection with the New Year’s Day shooting and robbery of a Clinton County bar owner. Ethan Robert Miller, of Carlyle, was taken into investigative custody Saturday night, ultimately being arrested and charged late Sunday. A group of individuals are believed responsible for multiple vehicle burglaries in Clinton County and the Metro East, with the incident at Flatbranch being an armed robbery gone bad. Miller has been formally charged with Class X felony aggravated discharge of a firearm, Class 1 attempted armed robbery, Class 3 felony aggravated battery of a victim over the age of 60 and Class 3 felony aggravated battery causing great bodily harm. According to the Clinton County Sheriff’s Department, they received a call around 2:11 a.m. New Year’s Day from Phil Koehler, the owner of Flatbranch Saloon in rural Carlyle, saying he was shot in the chest during an attempted robbery and was being taken to the hospital. Two suspects were seen fleeing from the scene and before being taken to the hospital, Koehler reportedly gave a description of the suspects to the first deputy on the scene. Clinton County Crimestoppers had been offering a $5,000 reward for information leading to the arrests and convictions of those responsible. It’s unclear if the arrests came as the result of a Crimestoppers tip. The gun believed used in the Flatbranch incident has been recovered, according to the sheriff’s department. Miller remains in custody of the Clinton County jail, with bail set at $100,000. If he is able to post bond he is prohibited from having contact with Koehler or the juvenile suspect. Judge William Becker appointed Miller a public defender and scheduled a January 14 preliminary hearing.
