Harness Tracks Trot To Bankruptcy Court

(Chicago, IL) — The state’s only two harness racing tracks have filed for bankruptcy as they try to keep themselves in operation and fend off seizure of their property. The Balmoral and Maywood Park tracks were caught up in a court case tied to a pay-to-play scheme linked to former Governor Rod Blagojevich. A court recently ordered the tracks to pay 78-million-dollars to four riverboat casinos, money the casinos had to pay the racing industry under a law signed by Blagojevich in return for a promised campaign contribution from a racing industry executive. The state is approving 2015 licenses for Maywood and Balmoral on a month-to-month basis.
