(MT. VERNON, IL) –Jefferson County State’s Attorney Doug Hoffman has announced a 21-year-old man charged in the shooting death in 2011 of a Mt. Vernon cab driver has pleaded guilty to First Degree Murder, and will have to serve 100 percent of his sentence. Damondros Q. James of Mt Vernon has entered an open plea of guilty to First Degree Murder stemming from his involvement in the shooting death of 75-year-old Charles Ellis on May 31st, 2011. As a result of his plea, James will be sentenced at a date to be determined. James faces a sentence of between 20 and 60 years in prison and must serve 100 percent of his sentence. Ellis was killed in his cab at the intersection of Sixth and Bell streets in Mt. Vernon during an alleged attempted robbery. James was arrested the next day along with then 16-year-old Christopher Wells, of Mt. Vernon, and then-18-year-olds Mark Taylor and Demandre Black. James and Taylor are from Mt. Vernon, while Black is from Swansea.
