Fatal Traffic Collision Claims Life of Mt. Vernon Man

(NASHVILLE, IL) — Authorities responded to a fatal accident just after 7 a.m. Friday that took the life of a 52-year-old Mt. Vernon man on Illinois Route 127 in Nashville. Reports indicate George O. Phillips was on his way to work at Republic of Tea when his car crossed the center line and struck an oncoming semi head on near Enterprise Avenue and Mockingbird Road. Washington County Coroner Mark Styninger pronounced Philips dead on the scene at 7:16 Friday morning. Route 127 was shut down for a period of time Friday morning as first responders responded to the scene. Illinois State Police accident reconstruction experts are still investigating the accident.
