Battle Brewing Over Future Of Landlines

(Springfield, IL) — Illinois consumer advocates are expecting a fight with telephone companies in the coming year over the availability of landline phone service. The state’s telecommunications law expires next year, and the phone companies are expected to push for an end to the requirement that they offer home phone service across the state and low-cost service programs designed for low-income families. The Citizens Utility Board cited consumer surveys to claim that the public wants landline service to remain a requirement. AT&T Illinois claims few people in its service area use the lowcost landline service the law requires them to provide.
