(MT. VERNON, IL) — Mt. Vernon Police responded to an armed robbery Monday morning at a Huck’s Convenience Store at 540 Fairfield Road. The investigation revealed two black males robbed the store and left in a truck. Patrol officers located the abandoned vehicle a short time later. The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department made contact with the vehicles owner and determined the vehicle was taken during a robbery at the owner’s residence. Earlier Monday, the Biggie’s Store off Interstate 57 and Route 161 was also robbed at gunpoint. A Mt. Vernon Police Detective observed the suspect vehicle from the Biggie’s armed robbery pull into a residence on South 18th street in Mt. Vernon and several subjects entered the residence. A search warrant for the residence was obtained from Jefferson County State’s Attorney Doug Hoffman. Four people and a child exited the residence in the initial stages of the incident. A fifth adult, with a small child, refused to exit the residence. Contact was able to be made with the subject and negotiations began. After approximately three hours, the final suspect exited the residence with the child and was taken into custody. During a search of the residence, detectives located stolen merchandise, currency, two firearms and ammunition. Four people – 23 year old Deandre Rudd, 23 year old Terrance Williams, 24 year old David Weatherall, and 22 year old Deandrea Rudd – have been charged in connection with the robberies. The investigation is ongoing with final charges to be determined by the Jefferson County State’s Attorney’s office.
