MCLEANSBORO — Renovation work at McLeansboro City Hall appears to be dead after a motion to proceed with the second half of architectural plans for the remodel died at the city council meeting Wednesday.

According to city council member Dale Biggerstaff, the city has spent about $10,000 for the first half of the work to be done, and the motion was to spend another $10,000 to $12,000 to finish the design work, which would include soliciting bids for the project.

Alderman James Mason made a motion to complete the work, but no second to the motion came. Mason and Biggerstaff on their thoughts of the motion.

The council approved $270,000 to go towards the work at its September meeting, but they would not know how much the construction would cost unless they committed to the rest of the design work.

Also at Wednesday’s meeting, the council voted to allow Aldermen Maulding and Biggerstaff to purchase a side-by-side for mosquito abatement and weed control costing no more than $8,000. Members also voted to advertise for bids for a replacement vehicle for the electric department and tabled any action on purchasing a vehicle for the meter reader so parameters can be decided for the vehicle.
