JEFFERSON COUNTY — A 49-year-old Mt. Vernon man was sentenced Thursday in Jefferson County court to 15-years in prison after his probation was revoked on a 2017 narcotics conviction.

Earl Jones Jr. was initially arrested in the case in 2017 and charged with two Class 1 felony counts of possessing narcotics near a school or park and a Class 4 felony count of possession of a controlled substance.

He subsequently pleaded guilty to one of the Class 1 felonies and was sentenced in 2018 to 48 months probation. However, in April 2019, he was arrested for possession of methamphetamine.

Prosecutors then petitioned the court to revoke Jones’ probation and he admitted in May to the allegations in the petition.

Due to his criminal history, Jones was eligible for extended term sentencing. A Class 1 felony is punishable by between 4 and 15 years in prison. He was also ordered to pay more than $7,000 in fines and fees, with nearly $5,000 remaining outstanding.
