MCLEANSBORO — The McLeansboro City Council approved giving residents a grace period for ATV/UTV permits through the end of the year, and dropped the registration fee for 2020 at Tuesday night’s meeting.

The fee will drop from $100 to $50 in 2020. If a person registers an ATV/UTV after July 1st, the permit fee would drop to $25 for the remainder of the year.

McLeansboro Police Chief Nathan Taylor told the council that registrations have remained around 30 vehicles per year in recent years after starting close to 50 when the ordinance was originally passed. He said the goal of the department is to keep people in compliance of the law and not to write tickets. He recommended to drop the registration fee in the hopes of getting more people compliant.

Also at Tuesday’s meeting, the council approved the purchase of a salvaged dump truck previously owned by the city and also of a Harley rake. Council members also approved the appointment of Ann Marie Harland as the city’s part-time website administrator.
