California Earthquakes Have Local Officials Warning Residents to Prepare for Quake Here

SOUTHERN ILLINOIS — In the wake of the recent earthquakes and powerful aftershocks in California, these events remind us that an earthquake could happen at any time right here in southern Illinois.

Franklin County Emergency Management Director Ryan Buckingham says we live in two active seismic zones – the New Madrid Seismic Zone and the Wabash Valley Seismic Zone. He says living between these two zones enhances our chances of having an earthquake.

Since earthquakes happen without notice, what should you do when an earthquake happens.

There are also several steps you need to take to help prevent injuries and property damage a home.

Buckingham says you should consider carrying earthquake insurance to protect yourself and your home in the event a quake ever happens.

You should also have a plan in place for your family and have the necessary supplies available to survive in case of a catastrophic earthquake until help can arrive. You can find that information at ready.illinois.gov.
