MARION COUNTY — A 44-year-old Ripley, Mississippi man was killed and two others injured in a one-car rollover late Tuesday morning on Interstate 57 near Salem.

According to Marion County Coroner Troy Cannon, Randy Barnes sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene.

The crash occurred shortly before noon Tuesday, approximately one mile south of Salem. The vehicle apparently entered the grass median for an unknown reason as it was traveling southbound, and overturned several times. Two of the four passengers were ejected.

One adult and one child were airlifted from the scene by medical helicopters to St Louis area hospitals. Another child was taken by ground ambulance to Salem Township Hospital for treatment and later transferred to a St Louis hospital for further treatment.

The Illinois State Police, Marion County Coroner’s Office, Marion County Sheriff’s Office, Salem Police Department, Salem Fire Department, United Medical Response, and IDOT all responded to the crash. Traffic flow was affected for several hours.

The staff of Salem Township Hospital Emergency Department also assisted with the ensuing investigation and follow-up.

Sandoval, Kinmundy-Alma and Odin firefighters were called for mutual aid.

The Sutherland/Garnier Funeral Home in Centralia is assisting the family with local arrangements.
