MT. VERNON — The biggest mystery in Mt. Vernon earlier this week is solved. The major water leak that remained hidden for days was located Friday afternoon.

On a post on the city’s Facebook page, Mt. Vernon Police Chief Trent Page and Assistant Police Chief Robert Brands followed up on a lead from Coroner Roger Hayse and the leak was found on a 10″ main north of Woodglen Acres east of Interstate 57 in a wooded area.

The leak north of Woodglen Acres was believed to be leaking three to four thousand gallons of water every minute while it was leaking, costing the city at least six million gallons of water.

The city continues to work to restore water to all residents and businesses and to fix the major leak, along with other leaks found or caused by the main leak.

The entire city of Mt. Vernon remains under a boil order until further notice.
