MT. VERNON — Two men were arrested overnight Monday into Tuesday after each man led police on car chases through Mt. Vernon and Jefferson County.

Mt. Vernon Police received a call at about 7:15 Monday evening about a man, later identified as 52-year-old Robert Garrett of Mt. Vernon, was intoxicated and driving a white sedan approximately 60 mph eastbound on Perkins.

MVPD officers initially could not find the vehicle, until a second call about 10 minutes later reported the vehicle driving in circles at 23rd, 24th, Logan, and Perkins, running into yards in the process.

Police located the vehicle in a yard in the 2800 block of Logan before Garrett took off. Garrett eventually struck a tree in the 1000 block of S. 24th Street and was ejected from his vehicle.

Garrett was taken to a local hospital and was treated and released. He was taken to the Jefferson County Justice Center charged with aggravated DUI while license revoked, aggravated fleeing and damaging less than $300 in property, and driving on a revoked license.

Later Monday evening, just before midnight, a Jefferson County Sheriff’s Deputy spotted a vehicle fitting the description of a reported stolen vehicle at Route 15 and Opdyke Lane traveling at a high rate of speed.

The deputy pursued the vehicle, with the chase eventually hitting speeds of over 100 m.p.h. Deputies at that point ended the pursuit of the vehicle, but the man, later identified as 28-year-old Anthony Lavallee of Mt. Vernon, circled back to where deputies had stopped and flipped police off as he passed by speeding in the other direction. Police restarted the pursuit and tried to set up spike strips to stop the vehicle. But Lavallee had abandoned the vehicle on Route 148 south of Veterans Memorial Drive, and deputies could not locate the suspect.

Mt. Vernon Police later located Lavallee at a home in the 300 block of North 6th St. around 3:30 a.m. Tuesday, and placed him under arrest for aggravated fleeing 21+ m.p.h. over the speed limit, and motor vehicle theft.

Both Garrett and Lavellee remain in the Jefferson County Jail.
