BENTON — The Benton City Council approved two items dealing with liquor licenses at Monday night’s meeting.

City Attorney Tom Malkovich discussed first with the council the liquor license dealing with Sunday sales. Right now, clubs in Benton can only sell liquor on Sunday from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. and must pay an annual fee of $1,200 to do so.

The council voted unanimously for the change.

Malkovich then moved on to liquor licenses for gaming parlors. He told the council this issue was discussed in June of last year when a request was made to amend Ordinance 21-2-6 to add a license. Malkovich began preparing a draft, but the council never looked at it. Malkovich says the council approved moving forward with that draft at that time.

The council voted 4 to 1 to move forward on this issue. Commissioner Lee Messersmith voted no.
