Mt. VERNON — Numerous fire departments came to the aid of the Mt. Vernon Fire Department Wednesday night when a large fire broke out at Kendrick Paper Company on Route 37 north of downtown Mt. Vernon.

Mt. Vernon Fire chief Kevin Sargent says the call came in around 5:20 Wednesday evening, and when fire crews arrived, the front building and five tractor-trailers near the building were fully engulfed in flames.

Sargent says once crews became fully operational, firefighters fought the fire back to keep the fire from spreading to the warehouse behind the main building and also to keep heat from causing any apartment buildings at Lamplight Manor just south of the property to catch fire.

The facility was full of products like paper, cardboard and plastic. Fire officials say explosions in the building were caused by equipment, like forklifts, exploding.

Power lines above the facility caused firefighters concern, so power was turned off to the area while they battled the blaze.

Firefighters remained on the scene all night, monitoring hot spots to ensure the fire didn’t start up again.

No one was injured. The Illinois State Fire Marshal’s office is investigating the cause of the fire.
