Four people are recovering after being involved in a three-vehicle crash on westbound I-24 near the Metropolis exit Sunday afternoon.

Illinois State Police say just before 4, 68-year-old Lois M. Freeman of Metropolis had pulled her pickup truck onto the right shoulder of westbound I-24 at milepost 38 because of mechanical problems with the vehicle. She attempted to enter back onto the right lane of the interstate when she drove into the path of a SUV driven by 61-year-old Brian D. Foree of Troy, Illinois. Foree could not change lanes due to traffic and had to abruptly slow down to a low speed to avoid hitting Freeman.

A semi driven by 75-year-old John C. Wilkin of Olney was driving behind Foree and was not able to slow down causing him to hit Foree in the rear sending them into the center median. Wilkin continued forward striking Freeman in the rear. Freeman and Wilkin’s vehicles came to rest on the left shoulder.

Freeman, her passenger 57-year-old Cecil D. Marten of Metropolis and Foree’s passenger, 58-year-old Sandra M. Foree of Troy, were taken by ambulance to Lourdes Hospital in Paducah for non-life threatening injuries sustained in the crash. Brian Foree was flown to an Evansville, Indiana hospital for non-life threatening injuries sustained in the crash. No word is Wilkin suffered any injuries.

The crash is under investigation.
