(Edwardsville, IL) — The Madison County State’s Attorney says the verdict against a sex offender that he is sexually dangerous allows prosecutors to keep him off the streets for life. A Madison County jury rendered a verdict today finding James Lopes a sexually dangerous person. The civil case developed after complaints that Lopes made inappropriate contact with children and their parents in Madison County last year. The jury determined that the severity and complexity of Lopes’ mental health diagnosis makes it unlikely he could be successfully treated or rehabilitated. He will be committed indefinitely to the Illinois Department of Corrections in a facility specifically designed for sex offenders.
