HARRISBURG, Ill. (AP) — The winter season is coming to the Shawnee National Forest in southern Illinois, where officials are closing recreation sites and roads for the season.

The (Carbondale) Southern Illinoisan reports that the national forest is closing campgrounds starting Dec. 15. That includes the Red Bud Campground at Bell Smith Springs, Pine Ridge Campground at Pounds Hollow, Pine Hills and Johnson Creek campgrounds. The USDA Forest Services says most campgrounds will reopen on March 15.

The Shawnee National Forest encompasses more than 400 square miles in the southern tip of Illinois.
