(MT. VERNON, IL) — A mental fitness trial will now be held for a 32-year-old Mt. Vernon man charged in Jefferson County Court with multiple felonies for sex acts committed against two children. Neither the defense nor prosecution could agree on the findings of a mental fitness evaluation performed on Charles Mick, so the court has ordered a six-person jury to hear the evidence on January 17, 2017, and determine if Mick is fit to stand trial. The mental fitness evaluation had been ordered in August when defense attorney Scott Quinn raised doubts regarding the mental fitness of his client, but he now disagrees with the findings of that evaluation. Mick is charged with three Class X counts of predatory criminal sexual assault of a victim under the age of 13 and three Class 2 felony counts of aggravated criminal sexual abuse of a victim under the age of 13. According to court information, the charges stem from an investigation conducted by the Illinois State Police. The investigation showed Mick committed the sex acts against one victim between March 21 and March 27, 2015, and against another victim between 2006 and 2009. Mick remains in the Jefferson County Jail, with bail set at $500,000.
